Over the weekend, Canadian Lawmakers extended Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau’s Emergency Powers Act amid record protests in the nation's capital Ottowa, due to controversial vaccine mandates. Here’s why that matters.

On Monday, Canadian Parliament Members agreed to a plan that would extend Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's emergency powers, as a result of the increased protests in the nation's capital. The protests began around three weeks ago, following the passing of a controversial vaccine mandate that forced manufacturers, store-owners, and most prominently, Canadian truck drivers to receive at least two shots of the COVID-19 vaccine, to resume their ordinary functions in their jobs. After all, nearly 3.24% of all Canadians are involved in the trucker industry, and together with the 606 billion dollars that the Canadian retail industry contributes to the 155-year-old, North American country's large economy, this vaccine mandate is devastating and has since spurred nation-wide condemnation by much of Canada’s right-wing.

Like most democratic states, Canada has praised peaceful protests that attempt to voice its citizen's distaste for their government's policies, policies that citizens see as unjust. In fact, nearly 61% of Canadians say they “sympathize,” with the trucker convoy, according to a Global news poll. Suffice to say, this was certainly a reasonable ground to peacefully protest at the nation's capital, but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau doesn't see it that way. Trudeau has gained unprecedented power due to the coronavirus pandemic, and like his (alleged) father, the power has gotten to his head. This is the first time in two years that Trudeau’s emergency powers are being questioned so broadly like this, and he is furious. In the 2021 Canadian Elections, the Liberals set a record for the lowest vote share of a party that would go on to form a government ever, winning only 32.6% of the popular vote. People do not want Justin Treudue leading a democracy, and it's not only the civilians.

Last week, Melissa Lantsman, a Canadian parliament member, challenged Justin Trudeau's shocking police crackdown of the anti-vaccine-mandate protests in Ottawa, but instead of a substance-filled response, Trudeau resorted to a pathetic personal attack on the 37-year-old Conservative. Justin Trudeau accused Lantsman, a Jewish ascendent of holocaust survivors of standing “with people who wave swastikas,” an allegation that remains unfounded. Justin Trudeau’s support amongst conservatives and even members of his own Liberal party is dropping, and he knows that. It's the reason why he is actively utilizing his emergency powers to arrest individuals who are protesting, seizing their vehicles, and most shockingly, pausing many of the demonstrator's bank accounts. This is not the behavior of a democratic leader and is unbecoming of one of America’s key allies. Canada’s leader is an undemocratic, tyrannical, hypocrite, and we all ought to recognize it.
